How the therapy works
Most conventional and complementary therapies treat only individual symptoms, while ignoring their basic cause. The reason why the Gerson Therapy® is effective with so many different ailments is because it restores the body’s incredible self-healing ability by bringing the debilitated immune system to optimum functioning.
The way the Gerson Therapy aims to regenerate the organism is to supply all of its important metabolic requirements by flooding it with nutrients, from almost 20 pounds of organically grown fruit and vegetables daily. Most of this is given in the form of up to 13 fresh raw juices. There are also three square meals, consisting of raw and cooked foods, including delicious salads, a special soup, jacket potatoes, a wide range of vegetables and unlimited amounts of fruits. This diet, rich in live enzymes, vitamins, minerals and trace elements is supplemented by a range of digestive aids and other natural substances.
Oxygenation is usually more than doubled, to correct oxygen deficiency in the blood, which contributes to many degenerative diseases. The metabolism is also stimulated by the addition of thyroid, potassium and other supplements. In degenerative diseases the body becomes increasingly unable to excrete waste materials, which often causes liver and kidney problems. To prevent this and achieve a general detoxification of the body, the Gerson Therapy uses a high-powered system to eliminate harmful wastes, regenerate the liver, reactivate the immune system and restore the body’s essential defences. Thanks to this complex programme, the body can regenerate and become healthy, with a good chance to be protected from future illnesses.

It is important to understand the need for thorough detoxification, which is one of the pillars of the Gerson Therapy. Once the immune system becomes reactivated by the diet, it begins to break down tumours and release stored toxins into the blood stream. These have to be constantly removed by the organs of detoxification, which must be supported in their work. To this purpose the intensive therapy prescribes a strict regime of coffee enemas. The caffeine in the coffee enemas is absorbed by the liver, stimulating it to excrete the toxins which it filters from the blood. Increased bile flow allows the toxins to be expelled naturally. Castor oil is also used.

Unique benefits
People who undertake the therapy often find that although it demands great commitment and much effort, it can also provide unexpected opportunities for inner development, which would otherwise not occur. Another unique benefit is that the patient is in charge of his or her treatment, recovery and wellbeing, leading to a sound sense of autonomy which is beneficial in itself.
